2020 Upper Midwest EMMY® CHAPTER SILVER CIRCLE HONOREE
KCRG-TV
Cedar Rapids, IA
Dave Franzman started his broadcast career in 1974 as an on-air intern reporter at WRTV in Indianapolis, Indiana during his senior year of college. Following graduation, his professional career began at WYUR-TV in Huntsville, Alabama. Then in 1978, he moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa and started his work at KCRG-TV9. And that’s where he dedicated the next four decades of his career until his retirement in December 2018. Dave was an on-air general assignment reporter except for 1 ½ years when he worked as the station’s assignment manager for news. Ironically, Dave worked his entire career, almost 45 years in all, at ABC affiliates.
As at KCRG TV9 reporter, Dave covered every type of story including every Iowa Caucus from 1980 until 2016. He says one of the most significant and intense news stories he covered was the flood of 2008 that inundated the city of Cedar Rapids and surrounding area with flash flooding, doing stories on the recovery up until the year of his retirement.
Dave’s strangest adventure at KCRG-TV9 was doing some “wing-walking” at a Cedar Rapids air show in the late 1980s.
Dave was born in Owensboro, Kentucky and grew up in Southern Indiana. He attended college at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana.
Dave is married and has two adult children and five grandchildren. He enjoys hiking and biking as well as photography. He loves to travel and likes out-of-the-way vacation spots.
