2019 Upper Midwest Emmy® Scholarship Recipients

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences – Upper Midwest Foundation is proud to announce its 2019 Scholarship recipients.

Each year, NATAS-UMW Foundation awards several scholarships to students within our chapter region (Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa and western Wisconsin).

This year, thanks to help from generous sponsorship contributions from Slumberland, the Carlini family as well as our chapter members and past Gold & Silver Circle recipients, we are able to award $4,000 in scholarships to area students! This year, each scholarship recipient will receive $2,000 for tuition & books costs for school in the fall of 2019.

Since 2002, the NATAS-UMW Foundation has awarded 85 scholarships worth $201,500 to regional students who want to study media production or journalism in college.

Haley Larson – Minneapolis South High School

HALEY LARSON – MINNEAPOLIS SOUTH HIGH SCHOOL – Haley is a senior with dreams of becoming a filmmaker. She’s involved with her school’s Theater, Conspiracy Club, Between Water and Sky, Access/Print Programs. Access/Print is a merit-based extracurricular program that admits a small number of students each year, based on their portfolio and personal interviews. The students learn various fine art printmaking techniques, and then plan and execute a series of independent projects resulting in a gallery exhibit that they curate and hang with their fellow students.

Haley excels both in planning and learning how to execute her vision. She is able to articulate her ideas, explain further with sketches, modify as needed based on trials and execute an ambitious project by utilizing her time wisely. Next year, Haley will study film making at the Kansas City Art Institute.

“I would like to thank the Upper Midwest Emmy Foundation and its sponsors for this scholarship. It is an incredible honor to be awarded this prize. At school, I am taking four visual arts classes, one of which is me building a new film class curriculum with our digital arts teacher. I work on class computers and learn how to use Adobe programs like a professional. In the fall I will probably be going to Kansas City Art Institute to study Filmmaking. This scholarship will help me to pay for a good portion of my tuition, enabling me to focus on my passion for storytelling instead of working off tuition. My goals are to someday be a recognized artist in the film field who makes a change in the fundamental ways we tell visual stories. Thank you again for aiding me in achieving this dream. Thank you.” – Haley Larson.
