2016 Upper Midwest Emmy® Scholarship Recipients

NATAS Logo_Upper MidwestThe National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences – Upper Midwest Chapter/Foundation is proud to announce its 2016 Scholarship recipients.

Each year, NATAS-UMW Chapter/Foundation awards several scholarships to high school and college/university students within our chapter region (Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa and western Wisconsin).

This year, thanks to help from generous sponsorship contributions from Slumberland, the Carlini, Pfister and Beaurline families as well as our chapter members and past Gold & Silver Circle recipients, we were able to award $18,000 in scholarships to area students!

Since 2002, the NATAS-UMW Chapter/Foundation has awarded 80 scholarships worth $185,500 to regional students who want to study media or journalism in college


Sarah RudlangCAROL RUEPPEL LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIP (Sponsored by NATAS-Upper Midwest Chapter)

Sarah Rudlang – St. Cloud State University (MN) – Sarah has spent her college career devoted to leadership in her campus TV station and newspaper newsrooms. Rudlang also works part-time on the weekends on the assignment desk at WCCO-TV in Minneapolis. “I cannot put my gratitude into words to Carol Rueppel and the Upper Midwest Emmy® Chapter! Not only is this a great honor, but a huge financial relief to help me continue my education at St. Cloud State. Storytelling is my life passion and to have such great support is so encouraging. This generosity and kindness is truly immeasurable and appreciated. I’m so excited to continue to serve my community and bring people’s stories to light. Thank you so much!”


Ryan HallULYSSES S. CARLINI SCHOLARSHIP (Sponsored by Carlini Family)

Ryan Hall – Hennepin Technical College – Ryan has been heavily involved in TV production since high school with Bloomington Educational Cable (BEC-TV) and is on the President’s Achievement List at Hennepin Tech. After graduation, Hall plans to study media at the University of Northwestern in St. Paul, MN. “It is an honor to receive this scholarship from the Upper Midwest Emmy® Chapter. I have a strong passion for film and video production, and I am looking forward to continuing to develop my skills and work on exciting future projects!”


Allison WongNATAS – UPPER MIDWEST JOURNALISM SCHOLARSHIP (Sponsored by NATAS-Upper Midwest Chapter)

Allison Wong – Loras College (Dubuque, IA) – Allison is a media studies major with a minor in politics. Allison has been a reporter, anchor, producer with her college news station LCTV since her freshman year. Last summer she held an internship with KWWL in Dubuque, and this summer she will be with KCRG TV9. “I can’t thank the Upper Midwest Emmy Chapter enough for awarding me with this scholarship. I am very passionate about broadcast journalism: I love meeting new people, telling their stories and learning new things every day. This is why I can’t wait to become a broadcast journalist fulltime, and I am forever grateful to the Chapter for supporting my pursuit of an education in this field.”


Nick KellyNATAS – UPPER MIDWEST CHAPTER SCHOLARSHIP (Sponsored by Slumberland)

Nick Kelly – Lakeville North High School (MN) – Nick keeps busy covering news & sports for his high school TV program. He is also one of the few teens who have been selected to cover high school sports for professional organizations like the Minneapolis Star Tribune newspaper, Minnesota Hockey Magazine and the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL). “I am grateful to the Upper Midwest Emmy® Chapter for providing me with this scholarship. It will greatly help take away some of the financial burden that comes with college, ultimately helping me pursue journalism, my dream career. As a direct-admit to the journalism school at the University of Missouri, I will pursue a four-year bachelor’s degree in journalism to go along with a minor in business. I want my career to be filled with opportunities to share information and incredible stories–that is my career goal.”

Grant KleimanNATAS – UPPER MIDWEST CHAPTER SCHOLARSHIP (Sponsored by Slumberland)

Grant Kleiman – Hutchinson High School (MN) – This year, Grant received his school’s Ecky Awards for “Best Reporting” and “Best Editing”.  Grant also serves as a student representative on Ridgewater College’s technology committee. “I would like to give a big “THANK YOU” to the Upper Midwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. I truly appreciate the scholarship. Being recognized by television professionals is incredible. I grew up watching your work, even when I should have been doing other things! I will work hard and promise to pay it forward when I am in your shoes. Thank you for believing in me!”

Madeline PoppeNATAS – UPPER MIDWEST JOURNALISM SCHOLARSHIP (Sponsored by NATAS-Upper Midwest Chapter)

Madeline Poppe – Clarksville High School (IA) – Madeline or “Maddie” as her friends call her, is a musician with a love for visual graphic arts, still photography and video. This fall, Maddie plans to study videography at Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge, Iowa. “I’d like to sincerely thank the Upper Midwest Emmy® Chapter for selecting me for this journalism scholarship. I’m so grateful there are scholarships available not only to student who excel in sports and academics, but also the arts!”
