Mollie Cooney anchors NewsChannel 8’s Noon news. She first joined the KCCI team in 1976 and then rejoined us in 1982.
Mollie was born in Clarinda, but she grew up in Des Moines and graduated from Roosevelt High School. Then she went to Iowa State University and earned a degree in journalism and political science.
Mollie’s career at NewsChannel 8 started in 1976 when she began working as a reporter/anchor. In 1979, she left to work for KNTV-TV in San Jose, Calif. Then in 1982, Mollie and her husband, Kevin, rejoined the KCCI staff.
Mollie has won several journalism awards, including first place for Public Affairs at the IBNA 2002 awards for “Organ Donor Special.” She also received the 1994 James Schwartz Award for Distinguished Service to Journalism from Iowa State University, won first place in the Television Division of the 1997 Iowa Health Care Media Awards, and received the 1998-99 Communications Award from the American Heart Association.
In November of 1997, she got the first interview with Bobbi and Kenny McCaughey, parents of the world’s only surviving septuplets. She is also named in their book “Seven From Heaven.”
In 2004, Mollie was selected as the recipient of the Iowa Association of Family and Consumer Sciences “Friend of the Family Award.”
In 2009, she created the series “In the Artist’s Studio” which airs Sunday mornings to highlight the work of local artists.
In 2011, Mollie received the Doug Brown Media Award, Ames Community Arts Council 2011 Art Awards.
Mollie is a former board member with Iowa State University’s Greenlee School of Journalism; the Iowa Gold Star Military Museum; IRIS (Iowa Radio Reading Information Services); Greater Des Moines Leadership Institute and Hospice of Central Iowa.
