The NATAS-Upper Midwest Regional Emmy® Awards Gala and Gold & Silver Circle Awards will be Saturday, September 28th, 2013 at the State Theater in downtown Minneapolis.

We will have a our Gala dinner party at Solera Restaurant kitty-corner to the block of the theater on Hennepin Avenue.

This year, the NATAS – Upper Midwest Chapter received 200 entries from 30 different high schools and colleges/universities from across our region!

Liz Collin from WCCO-TV hosted the award ceremony and presented Crystal Pillars to the recipients.  The awards are presented to the schools for promotional purposes to encourage students to pursue the media arts.    Any student whose name is on the recipient entry form is eligible to purchase a duplicate Crystal Pillar Award.  We also offer nomination certificates and plaques for students listed on nominated entries.

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences – Upper Midwest Chapter/Foundation is proud to announce its 2013 Scholarship recipients.

Each year, NATAS-UMW Chapter/Foundation awards several $2,500 scholarships to high school and college/university students within our chapter region (Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa and western Wisconsin).

This year, thanks to help from generous sponsorship contributions from Slumberland, Hubbard Broadcasting, Twin Cities Public Television, as well as our chapter members and past Gold & Silver Circle recipients, we were able to award $15,000 in scholarships to area students!

Since 2002, the NATAS-UMW Chapter/Foundation has awarded 60 scholarships worth $125,500 to regional students who want to study media or journalism in college

Jacque is a junior at Wartburg College where she is working toward a major in Communication Arts and a minor in leadership. Schutte also serves as the Station Manager of Wartburg Television.  She intends to pursue a career as a morning show anchor-producer. “I realize going to college is a privilege not known to everyone.  I am extremely grateful to my family for all they have done to help me attend college.  This scholarship will be extremely helpful in aiding to finance my college education.  I am very appreciative of the Upper Midwest National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences for rewarding me with this scholarship.”

Jan Ryherd – Webster City High School (Webster City, IA)

Jan is a senior at Webster City High School where she’s been heavily involved in the weekly broadcast program, WCTV.  Over the past three years, Ryherd discovered her passion for broadcasting while being an on-air talent, a student director, and the technical director of WCTV. “If you’re looking for me at the high school, I can usually be found in the control room editing, designing graphics, or running cameras. I thank WCTV for starting me off in the broadcast field and I am very grateful to receive the Joel and Teresa Pfister Scholarship to help finance my higher education.”  Next year, Ryherd will attend Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa majoring in Mass Communications/ Journalism and minoring in Business.

Ravyn Silva – Eastview High School

Ravyn Silva – Eastview High School (Eagan, MN)

Ravyn’s been involved with media since her sophomore year at Eastview High School. Silva works on the school’s daily announcement show.  Ravyn is Eastview’s varsity football sideline videographer, where she shoots and produces a highlight tape for every game. Silva is in a mentorship program, where she interns three days a week with KSTP-TV in the Twin Cities for its daily news magazine show, Twin Cities Live.  Silva’s honors include recognition as a distinguished high school journalist by the Minnesota High School Press Association, as well as working on a sports production which earned a 2012 Upper Midwest Regional EMMY® award.  “Thanks to this scholarship, I will continue on with my passion and love of broadcast journalism while studying at the University of Texas at Austin, to hopefully someday fulfill my career dream of being an executive producer of entertainment television.”

NATAS Chapter/Foundation Scholarship

Tyler Schow – East Ridge High School (Woodbury, MN)

Tyler is busy with video at school and in his community.  At East Ridge High School, Schow was a Video and Lighting crew head for the theater program, a director for the school’s weekly news show, and a drum line captain for the marching band. While managing those activities, Tyler worked as a student television producer for the school district’s cable TV channel. In college, Tyler will pursue a major in Communications and Journalism. He also plans to continue his involvement in the fields of music and theater at either the University of Saint Thomas or the University of Minnesota Twin Cities.

 

Slumberland “Making a Difference” Governors Award

Statuettes - Statuettes may be purchased by Emmy® awards honorees listed on the final entry only. Stations, Production Companies, and Post Houses connected to an Emmy honoree’s entry, may purchase a single duplicate statue at $275 for a member, $325 for a non-member.  Click here to order online.

Production Plaque – Production plaques may be purchased by individuals designated by the entrant of an Emmy awarded entry. The NATAS-Upper Midwest Chapter/Foundation offers $2,500 student scholarship grants to be used for tuition & books.  We even pay the school directly so you don’t have to claim it as income for taxes!

Scholarships are open to high school and college/university students living in the five-state area served by the Upper Midwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

For consideration scholarship applicants must:

1. Submit completed scholarship grant application form.
2. Submit completed relevant essay. College scholarships require an additional DVD of your best work. Time Limit: 15 minutes.
3. Submit a copy of your most recent high school/college transcript.
4. Letter or letters of recommendation from relevant faculty or advisors.  Letters of recommendation can be accepted via email info@midwestemmys.org , providing it comes directly from the faculty or advisor’s school account.  Hard copy letters should be signed and printed on letterhead paper.
5. Each scholarship requires the student to write a mandatory essay for the scholarships offered.  Please submit your application for only one scholarship category.  Essays will be judged based on your ability to focus on the topic, answer the question and stay within the 500 word limit.  We will also pay attention to spelling and grammar.

Completed application, essay, transcript, DVD (if necessary) and letters of recommendation must be postmarked by Saturday, March 9th, 2013.  You may also email materials to info@midwestemmys.org.

NATAS – UPPER MIDWEST CHAPTER/FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP CATEGORIES

HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIPS: Open to high school seniors who have been accepted into an accredited post-secondary college or university for the fall of 2013.  The grants will be used for tuition and fees.

PFISTER JOURNALISM SCHOLARSHIP:  This scholarship is new this year and is in honor of the Joel Pfister who passed away this past year.  Joel’s wife Teresa helped organize and work with local media leaders to start the Upper Midwest Emmy® Chapter in 2000.  One of Joel’s legacies is the passion he had for the news of the day.  Together, Joel and Teresa were self-described “newies,” intent on keeping track of the changes to our society, our lives and our world of politics on a daily and, sometimes, hourly basis.  Teresa continues in this tradition.

Don Shelby Journalism Scholarship

The Don Shelby Journalism Scholarship is awarded to a student interested specifically in a broadcast or electronic news career. Don Shelby is a former anchor and Reporter at WCCO-TV in Minneapolis.  He joined the station as a news anchor in 1978 and is also an experienced investigative journalist, whose work has earned two George Foster Peabody awards and several Regional Emmy® Awards.

Ed Piette Leadership Scholarship

The Ed Piette Leadership Scholarship is for students who have demonstrated leadership skills in their school or community and who are planning to seek careers in broadcasting or electronic media. Ed Piette was the first President of the Upper Midwest Chapter of NATAS. He served as General Manager of KSTP-TV and WCCO-TV before moving on to a similar job in Boston.

tpt Public Media Scholarship: The tpt Public Media Scholarship will be awarded to an individual who aspires to a career in Media, with an eye toward non-profit Public Media and public service. This is a time of dramatic change in Public Media, as it transitions from traditional Public TV and Radio to a world of integrated technologies and tremendous opportunities.  Public Media today serves its communities on-air, on-line, and in direct community engagement.  Looking to the future, it seeks the next generation of storytellers, and the next generation of leaders: creative individuals who can leverage media tools to make their communities stronger.

You can make a fully tax-deductible donation to the NATAS – Upper Midwest Chapter Foundation.  We are an officially recognized 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization.  All money raised goes into scholarships and distributed directly to the student’s school for tuition and books.

Media-related individuals, companies or organizations may sponsor a NATAS – UMW student scholarship.  Sponsorship includes:

• Participating in the scholarship selection process
• Presentation of scholarship at school award ceremony (pending school approval)
• Company logo recognition on scholarship award presented
• Company logo with links in scholarship web and mass email promotion as well as printed in Student Awards and Emmy® Gala commemorative program.
