Nominees answer to the highest standards of integrity and honor in all aspects of their personal and professional lives. Nominations are accepted from the performing, creative, technical or administrative roles within the industry or in peripheral areas directly related to television such as commercial production, journalism or education. Neither nominators nor nominees need to be members of NATAS.

Silver Circle Guidelines

The Silver Circle is a society of honor. Television professionals from within the Chapter’s region are inducted in recognition of significant contributions made to our industry for twenty-five years or more. Award to consist of a Plaque and a gold and silver lapel pin. Nominations are solicited and then reviewed by the committee. In making their recommendation to the Board of Governors, the committee will consider:

1. Service to the television industry

2. Service to the National Academy

3. Service to the community involving television

4. Service to people working or training for careers in television

An individual’s entire career need not have been spent in a single market; but must have significant contributions within the Chapter’s region.

It is recommended, but not required, that candidates be nominated by the National Academy members and/or by previously selected members of the Silver Circle.

Nominated individuals may or may not be National Academy members. Nominations may be considered in future years if they are not selected.

There should be no circulation of ballots or lists of names being considered, since any publication of that information could be interpreted as revealing “losers.” Only the names of those to be inducted should be announced.

The selection should be made by the Board of Governors, or by a Special Committee appointed for this purpose. Discussions should be confidential.

The selection should be conducted in a way that avoids embarrassment to those not selected.

Gold Circle Guidelines

The Gold Circle honors individuals who meet all criteria for Silver Circle and have spent fifty or more years working in television. Like the Silver Circle, it is a regional chapter option. The National Awards Committee may also award individuals whose work is national or which has been spread over a number of markets and has not been recognized by a local chapter. Award to consist of a Medallion and a gold pin.

Requires fifty years service in television, not necessarily in a single market.

For individuals only. Groups, businesses and organizations are not eligible.

National Academy membership is not required.

Award may be presented as part of the Silver Circle ceremony, as part of the chapter’s Emmy Awards, or as a separate ceremony authorized by the National Awards Committee.

The Chapter’s Board of Governors should make the selections.

Announcements should be limited to those who are to be honored. No advance announcement should be made of the names of those under consideration to avoid embarrassing those who are not selected.

Chapters may bestow a lifetime membership on inductees if they wish.

Normally not to be awarded posthumously, but may be when special circumstances warrant, as determined by the Board of Governors.

Silver Circle membership is not required for the Gold Circle, though it is anticipated that would be the case in most situations.

New York, NY – April 26, 2010 – The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) announced the winners tonight of the 31st Annual Sports Emmy® Awards at a special ceremony at Frederick P. Rose Hall, Home of Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City. Winners in 32 categories including outstanding live sports special, live series, sports documentary, studio show, promotional announcements, play-by-play personality and studio analyst were honored.

The awards were presented by a distinguished group of sports figures and television personalities including Cris Collinsworth (sports analyst for NBC’s NFL coverage); Dan Hicks ( NBC’s primary Golf analyst); Jim Nantz (lead play-by-play announcer of The NFL on CBS and play-by-play broadcaster for NCAA college basketball and golf on CBS); James Brown(host The NFL Today on CBS and co-host of Inside the NFL on Showtime); Kenny Albert (play-by-play announcer for the NFL on FOX); Jon Gruden (analyst on ESPN’s NFL Monday Night Football); Hannah Storm (anchor on the new weekday morning editions of SportsCenter, ESPN); Mike Tirico (play-by-play announcer for ESPN’s NFL Monday Night Football, and golf on ABC); Ernie Johnson (host of Inside the NBA on TNT); Kenny Smith (studio analyst for Inside the NBA on TNT); Mary Carillo (an Emmy-Award winning correspondent on HBO’s Real Sports and a consultant for HBO Sports’ documentary unit); Max Kellerman (a boxing commentator for HBO’s World Championship Boxing and Boxing After Dark) and Andrea Kremer (a correspondent for Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel).

One of the highlights of the evening was the presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Award to John Madden, legendary sports broadcaster. Jerry Jones, owner and general manager of the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League and Dick Ebersol, Chairman, NBC Universal Sports & Olympics, co-presented the award to Madden.

John Madden, a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the most honored NFL broadcaster of all time, retired from television broadcasting in 2009 after 30 years calling games for every television network. Madden has won an unprecedented 16 Emmy Awards for Outstanding Sports Analyst/Personality, and is known by football fans nationwide for his ability to analyze the details of the game with wit, candor and an inimitable style.

“John Madden was the best analyst in the history of the National Football League and, in my opinion, the best analyst of any kind in sports television history,” said Dick Ebersol, Chairman, NBC Universal Sports & Olympics. “John is much more than a football legend, he’s an American icon. He is the only sports television talent who resonates across all ages – kids grow up today playing his video game and watching him on TV, as their fathers grew up watching him on NFL sidelines every Sunday as the head coach with the best winning percentage in league history.”

Madden now serves as the Special Advisor to Commissioner Roger Goodell of the National Football League. Prior to joining the broadcasting ranks, Madden had an outstanding career as head coach of the NFL’s Oakland Raiders. In 2006, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in recognition of his distinguished coaching career.

Madden’s EA Sports video game “Madden NFL Football” is the No. 1 selling sports video game of all-time with more than 60 million copies sold since its release in 1989.

The Sports Emmy® Award recipients were chosen by a Blue Ribbon Panel of industry peers. The awards recognize outstanding achievement by individuals and programs broadcast throughout the 2009 calendar year.

American Airlines and Grass Valley are the official sponsors of the 31st Annual Sports Emmy® Awards. Street & Smith’s Sports Business Journal is the exclusive magazine partner.

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, Upper Midwest Chapter, announced today the retirement of Teresa Vickery-Pfister who has served as the organization’s Executive Director since its inception in 2000.

“Teresa has been here since day one” said Emmy Trustee Harold Crump. “She is the one who helped start this organization when others balked at it.” Chapter President and General Manager of KMSP/WFTC Carol Rueppel presented Vickery-Pfister with her own Emmy Plaque for a decade of exceptional service. “Teresa has been the heart and soul of this organization for 10 years. Everyone who has ever been a part of the Emmys will miss her,” Rueppel said.

The Chapter has hired John “JJ” Murray as its new Executive Director. Murray is a 20-year industry veteran who currently serves on the Board of Governors. “The Chapter owes a great deal to Teresa for everything she’s done – not only to launch the Upper Midwest Emmys, but also to keep it moving forward since its creation,” said Murray.

A veteran journalist and award-winning educator, Murray currently owns Twin Cities Media, which specializes in journalism training, content development and video marketing for businesses and independent musicians. Murray has served as a Regional Director of the Northwest Broadcast News Association and the Iowa Associated Press, and is a member of the Radio & Television Digital News Organization.

“This is an exciting time for the Upper Midwest Emmys Chapter, as video journalism spreads from the TV to our computers and phones,” Murray said. “This Chapter is committed to honoring media excellence in our region, regardless of market size or video platform. We want anyone who produces video content – newspapers, bloggers, sports teams, city or community news organizations – to know that they are welcome in our organization.”

Murray becomes the official liaison between the Board of Governors, Chapter members, other Chapters, and the National office. He’ll work in conjunction with the Board of Governors and committee heads to support the Emmy Awards, scholarship program, seminars, workshops, communications, and all other programs.
