This competition is open to all high school and college students in our chapter media markets which include: Minneapolis-St. Paul, Des Moines-Ames, Cedar Rapids-Waterloo-Iowa City-Dubuque, Sioux Falls (Mitchell), Fargo-Valley City, La Crosse-Eau Claire, Duluth-Superior, Sioux City, Rochester-Mason City-Austin, Minot-Bismarck-Dickinson, Rapid City, and Mankato, MN.  Basically, if you go to school in our five state area… you can enter this competition!

The presentation of these awards is intended to be an incentive for the continued pursuit of excellence by those studying the television industry and multi-media journalism and to focus public attention on outstanding cultural, educational, technological, entertainment, news and informational achievements in television by high school and undergraduate college students.

Eligibility Period: Entries must have been produced for class or for school media platform between January 1st, 2011 – December 31st, 2011 (Entries which received NATAS – UMW awards or nominations in August, 2011 are not eligible to enter this contest)

FEES: There is a $30 fee/per entry to cover administrative & judging expenses.

All video entries will be uploaded and judged online!  We have partnered with SchoolTube to help us coordinate the contest.  SchoolTube is a safe and secure video server only used by registered educators.  Students can not post any video to this site without educator approval.

To Submit an Entry

1. Submit entry form and payment to NATAS Upper Midwest. Payment information is listed in the official rules. See below for official rules.
2. Students & Teachers must register for a free SchoolTube account to be able to submit an entry. Register here.
3. Successfully upload your video to the Upper Midwest High School Student Television Awards for Excellence channel. PLEASE NOTE: When uploading a video onto SchoolTube, please enter the Category Number, Category Name, Title of Entry, and Upper Midwest NATAS in the ‘tags” section during the upload. Please set the video to Public when uploading your entry to SchoolTube.
4. Wait approximately 1 hour (for encoding) and return to the Upper Midwest Student Television Awards for Excellence channel to find your video and view it.

NATAS – UPPER MIDWEST REGIONAL STUDENT TELEVISION AWARDS for EXCELLENCE CEREMONY - Thanks to great feedback from our regional educators we’ve decided to more our Student Television Awards for Excellence Ceremony to the opening night of the Midwest Journalism Conference on Friday March 30th, 2012 in Bloomington Minnesota near the Mall of America.

MWJ Conference is March 30th & 31st, 2012 at Crowne Plaza Airport Hotel in Bloomington, MN

This Northwest Broadcast News Association (NBNA) conference is the second largest regional journalism conference of its kind in the country.  NATAS-Upper Midwest is proud to have been a part of this event for more than a decade.  This is a great opportunity for educators and media students to learn from, and network with, the professionals in our Upper Midwest Region!  Click here for conference registration information.

You will see award-winning stories from our recent Gala and discuss the creative process and execution of a story from concept to completion. You’ll learn best practices for story construction, personalization and shooting/editing techniques that will spark your own creativity to take your stories to a new level. You will also get specific instructions on how easy the process is to put your work into consideration for an Emmy Award this coming year. We provide time in each workshop where audience members can show a story of their most recent work.  This unique critiquing session allows for everyone to share their feedback on the stories and learn from each other in casual and friendly environment.

Only one statuette is awarded in each category.   Additional statuettes can be ordered through the Upper Midwest office and may only be purchased by those listed on the official entry form in the call for entries as eligible to receive the Emmy®.  Those who worked on a project who are not eligible for a statuette can purchase a production certificate or plaque upon verification of their participation.

In accordance with the rules of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS), regardless of station or company affiliation, individual recipient(s) retain possession of the Emmy® statuette.  Emmy® Awards are presented to individuals, not their employers. Ownership of the statue is retained by the individual, even if an employer pays entry fees.  Emmy® statuettes are the property of NATAS and may not be sold or transferred to anyone other than the official recipient.

Production Plaque – Production plaques may be purchased by individuals designated by the entrant of an Emmy awarded entry. These plaques are for persons who made a significant contribution to a winning piece’s award- worthiness but were not listed on the original entry.  The rosewood plaque is 10 1/2 x 13 with an inscribed gold plate featuring the academy logo.  Cost is $175 for members, $200 for non-members.

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences-Upper Midwest Chapter is proud to recognize the 2011 Gold & Silver Circle Honorees. Honorees will receive their awards at the 2011 Upper Midwest Regional Emmy Gala on September 24th at the Historic State Theater in downtown Minneapolis, MN.

These individuals have made a significant contribution to the television industry well above and beyond that required by their job.  We honor their dedication and service to the industry, to NATAS, to the community and to people training for a career in the field.

Nominees answer to the highest standards of integrity and honor in all aspects of their personal and professional lives. Nominations are accepted from the performing, creative, technical or administrative roles within the industry or in peripheral areas directly related to television such as commercial production, journalism or education. Neither nominators nor nominees need to be members of NATAS.   The Gold & Silver Award Committee reviews all nominees past and present to make a recommendation to the NATAS-Upper Midwest Board of Governors.  This year, our Governor’s voted and approved the following honorees.

Dennis Anderson started his broadcasting career in radio while still in high school in 1961.  In 1967 he took his first television news job.  Anderson just retired this past spring from WDIO-TV where he served the viewers of Minnesota’s north shore and iron range for more than two decades.

Dave Jensch is one of those leaders who started at the bottom and worked his way up to Station Manager.  Dave started as a general assignment reporter, investigative reporter, producer, anchor, news director on up to Station Manager.  Jensch has been instrumental is his stations numerous regional Emmy Awards and Edward R. Murrow Award for Station of Excellence.

For more than three decades, in Iowa and around the world, Ron has reported history in the making. He was in Saudi Arabia, when the Persian Gulf War broke out and he was at the White House when the American hostages came home from Iran. We are looking for one piece of work that has measurably made a difference in at least one life.

1. Did the story achieve a standard of excellence?
2. Did it help a community? Change a life? Change a law that will change lives? This is about rewarding socially redeeming work.

There must be some measurable impact, with evidence submitted with the nomination.

• Evidence could include emails from viewers or the person/community helped, text of legislation introduced, or some other measurable form of changing a life.
• We require a DVD video submission of the story, then a written explanation and evidence of the measurable impact of that story.

The NATAS-Upper Midwest Regional Emmy Awards Gala and Gold & Silver Circle Awards will be Saturday, September 24th, 2011 at the State Theater in downtown Minneapolis.

We will have a bigger and better pre and post Gala party at the newly remodeled Crave Restaurant right next door to the theater.  Crave is opening a brand new restaurant with a roof-top party deck in the former Palomino Club.

SCSJ SPJ First Amendment Forum is April 15th at Atwood Little Theater at St. Cloud State Unviersity

“Have the Watchdogs Lost Their Bark?” pushes the envelope as the central theme of the SCSU First Amendment Forum.

Exceptional journalists headline the free, day-long workshop Friday, April 15 in the Atwood Little Theatre.  Sessions are 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. to 3 p.m.

“Whether crusading or investigative journalism, closely watching government and business gives our democracy balance,” said Michael Vadnie, coordinator.

The morning session addresses the historical context of investigative journalism.  Featured panelists are Maura Lerner, Star Tribune long-time depth reporter; Joe Rigert, retired Star Tribune investigative reporter, past IRE president and author; Bob Cowan, Minnesota’s senior videographer, WCCO; and Lee Rood, respected project team leader for the Des Moines Register.  Bill Huntzicker, SCSU professor and media historian, is the moderator.

Highlighting the late morning session is recognition of John Bodette, executive editor of the St. Cloud Times/Times Media, winner of the First Amendment Award.  His status report on the free press will end about noon.

The afternoon panel dubbed Future World promises to realistically update citizens about the status of watchdog journalism – and what may lie “on the other side.” (Also a premise in the movie Rango)

Featured panelists in the afternoon session are Jeff Kummer, seasoned project writer and politics reporter, Des Moines Register; Reg Chapman, WCCO investigative reporter; Dave Unze and John Bodette, St. Cloud Times/Times Media journalists; and Lee Rood.
