2015 BOARD OF GOVERNORS EMMY® AWARD
Hockey Day Minnesota: From St. Paul to Kuwait
The men and women stationed out of Saint Paul’s Holman Field — home base to the Minnesota National Guard 34th Combat Aviation Brigade and 2-147th Assault Helicopter Battalion — would’ve missed out on an unofficial state holiday while deployed to the Middle East. But, FOX Sports North, the Minnesota Wild and the Metropolitan Airport Commission partnered with Serving Our Troops and the Minnesota National Guard to fill the void, customizing a major civic event in an effort to link Minnesota hockey with the men and women serving us overseas.
Hockey Day Minnesota, an annual event for “the state of hockey,” was transformed into a special military tribute. Hosted at Saint Paul’s Holman Field, the 2015 experience incorporated unique interactions with soldiers and their families as the local community dropped the puck for a truly special message from home.
The team effort was apparent, both at the event and throughout FOX Sports North’s telecast, which commemorated the first time hockey had ever been played on an active airport tarmac, requiring FAA approval. Spectators and viewers noticed a strong military presence with two UH-60 Blackhawks, a CH-47 Chinook and a C-130 Hercules aircraft surrounding the newly constructed, refrigerated rink.
Thousands of viewers across a five-state area saw footage of a floor hockey game being played by Minnesota National Guard members stationed overseas as well as special features highlighting soldiers stories and their ties to the game of hockey. Plus, FOX Sports North incorporated live interviews with soldiers and updates from Camp Beuhring in Kuwait where the network had a production team posted.
The military theme extended to Hockey Day Minnesota at the Xcel Energy Center that evening, as Sgt. Jason Brubaker announced “Let’s Play Hockey” before the Wild game. There was also a special ceremonial puck drop coordinated via video feed between Lt. Colonel Jeff Merricks from Kuwait and his family in St. Paul.
FOX Sports North provided a platform, the Minnesota Wild contributed resources, the Metropolitan Airport Commissions assisted with logistics, Serving our Troops organized details and the Minnesota National Guard served as a connector to the military community.
Together, the organizations orchestrated a one-of-a-kind event, and the opportunity to bring a small piece of home to those who fight for our freedom.
