Dave Busiek



Silver Circle Honoree David Busiek

A native of St. Louis, Dave worked his way through two years at the University of Missouri as a part-time piano teacher. He discovered his love for news when he attended the Journalism School at the University of Missouri in Columbia, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Journalism.

Dave moved to Des Moines in 1976 to work for WHO radio. He became managing editor of the newsroom and anchored a two-hour, afternoon drive time news show.

In 1979, Dave began working at KCCI-TV as an education reporter, and then anchored the Sunday 10pm news for three years. In 1983, Dave was named co-anchor of KCCI’s 10pm newscast. He was named Assistant News Director in 1988. He was promoted to News Director in 1990.

Under his leadership, KCCI has won numerous regional Emmy® awards, a national Emmy® nomination, national Edward R. Murrow awards for Best Newscast and Overall Excellence, and NPPA Station of the Year multiple times.

Dave is past president of the radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) and has testified before Congress on allowing cameras in Federal courtrooms.

Dave is married to Laura Sands. They have two daughters, Anastasia and Julia, and a son, Benjamin.

Aside from his family, Dave says his true passion in life is tennis.
