2012 Student Television Awards for Excellence

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences – Upper Midwest Chapter is proud to announce its 2012 Regional Student Television Awards for Excellence!

This competition is open to all high school and college students in our chapter media markets which include: Minneapolis-St. Paul, Des Moines-Ames, Cedar Rapids-Waterloo-Iowa City-Dubuque, Sioux Falls (Mitchell), Fargo-Valley City, La Crosse-Eau Claire, Duluth-Superior, Sioux City, Rochester-Mason City-Austin, Minot-Bismarck-Dickinson, Rapid City, and Mankato, MN.  Basically, if you go to school in our five state area… you can enter this competition!

The presentation of these awards is intended to be an incentive for the continued pursuit of excellence by those studying the television industry and multi-media journalism and to focus public attention on outstanding cultural, educational, technological, entertainment, news and informational achievements in television by high school and undergraduate college students.

Eligibility Period: Entries must have been produced for class or for school media platform between January 1st, 2011 – December 31st, 2011 (Entries which received NATAS – UMW awards or nominations in August, 2011 are not eligible to enter this contest)

Entry Deadline:  Thursday February 9th,  2012

FEES: There is a $30 fee/per entry to cover administrative & judging expenses.    

NEW THIS YEAR!!!  New categories added for sports event, fiction, non-fiction, commercials and talent!

All video entries will be uploaded and judged online!  We have partnered with SchoolTube to help us coordinate the contest.  SchoolTube is a safe and secure video server only used by registered educators.  Students can not post any video to this site without educator approval.

To Submit an Entry

  1. Submit entry form and payment to NATAS Upper Midwest. Payment information is listed in the official rules. See below for official rules.
  2. Students & Teachers must register for a free SchoolTube account to be able to submit an entry. Register here.
  3. Successfully upload your video to the Upper Midwest High School Student Television Awards for Excellence channel. PLEASE NOTE: When uploading a video onto SchoolTube, please enter the Category Number, Category Name, Title of Entry, and Upper Midwest NATAS in the ‘tags” section during the upload. Please set the video to Public when uploading your entry to SchoolTube.
  4. Wait approximately 1 hour (for encoding) and return to the Upper Midwest Student Television Awards for Excellence channel to find your video and view it.

All Awards entry materials are to be mailed/delivered to: NATAS-Upper Midwest Student Television Awards 7319 Hunters Run  Eden Prairie, MN 55346.  Deadline to entry is February 9th, 2012.

NATAS-UMW will announce student contest nominees on our website on Friday March 9th, 2012.

NATAS – UPPER MIDWEST REGIONAL STUDENT TELEVISION AWARDS for EXCELLENCE CEREMONY – Thanks to great feedback from our regional educators we’ve decided to more our Student Television Awards for Excellence Ceremony to the opening night of the Midwest Journalism Conference on Friday March 30th, 2012 in Bloomington Minnesota near the Mall of America.

MWJ Conference is March 30th & 31st, 2012 at Crowne Plaza Airport Hotel in Bloomington, MN

This Northwest Broadcast News Association (NBNA) conference is the second largest regional journalism conference of its kind in the country.  NATAS-Upper Midwest is proud to have been a part of this event for more than a decade.  This is a great opportunity for educators and media students to learn from, and network with, the professionals in our Upper Midwest Region!  Click here for conference registration information.

We hope moving the student awards to the spring helps give students more time to use their awards or nominations to help graduates look for that all important summer internship or first job!

The NATAS – Upper Midwest Regional Student Television Awards for Excellence award ceremony is Friday March 30th, 2012 at the Crowne Plaza, Three Appletree Square, Bloomington, MN  55425 near the Minneapolis/St. Paul Int’l airport.  Registration this this award ceremony is separate from the conference and will be done through www.midwestemmys.org.

AWARDS: College and university students may refer to the fact that they are recipients of a NATAS –Upper Midwest Regional Student Television Award for Excellence, but may not use the Emmy® name or replica of the Emmy® figure in any form of commercial advertising or promotion.
